One month after the release of the workshop... What's next ?

Hello all

Thanks

First of all, thanks to everyone who supported this project. Those that came under my attention were emily (a Bionicle content creator whom I really admire for her work and dedication) who did a twitch live, and TTV with Eljay and Mesonak doing a Youtube video (that one really triggered a big boom in my stats).

Also, thanks for everyone who supported me financially by donating. Despite not raising thousands, it did help me a lot in troubled times. Plus, there was the massive visibility (25K views) on X.com, which is not much by X standard but is the highest I never got for any type of content.

Feedback

After receiving feedback from various sources, including emily, Jay, Meso, and close associates, it became evident that the interface of the project needed improvement in terms of intuitiveness. Certain elements need to be more visible at first glance, and the organization could be enhanced.

Moreover, there were suggestions regarding the color scheme. Initially, I limited the colors to reflect the four primary elements of the BRU universe (Fire, Air, Water, Earth) in line with my headcanon. However, I understand that a true character editor should offer more flexibility, so I intend to address this limitation.

Additionally, I'll add as many parts as I can. Notably if I add Nuva amors, I would like to add the Nuva masks and tools as well. It was also suggested that I add customs masks made by the community, and I would really like to (although people might not agree with my aesthetic tastes).

Challenges

But that's not going to go well for me at the moment. Right after I finished working on the workshop, I promised for months to friends that I would be working on another video game project with them (basically a Backroom themed game).

To execute the planned updates, I must create models, refine the UI, and revise the code extensively. Model creation is particularly time-consuming, and while the Team Kanohi Parts Pack covers some parts, I rely on stud.io for the rest, which produces acceptable models but lacks proper topology and UVs. Thus far, I have only managed to create a few parts, leaving over 20 remaining. Any assistance with Nuva models would greatly accelerate the process.

Furthermore, while donations provide a modest boost, I have recently accepted a seasonal job to ensure financial stability, which limits my availability to work on the project.

And the last obstacle, is that I have another aim. Remember the action game I always says Bionic Recur Unit was meant to be ? It's still in my head, and I wont be able to die peacefully if I never complete this idea. So let me talk to you about it...

The Dream

I've always been a fan of indie games. One that clicked with me was the roguelike genre, including Binding of Isaac and Noita. Also, die and try like Titan Souls, Rain World, and Deadbolt. I played also a lot of Half-life 2, and I always loved Metroid Prime.

I wish to combine all those influences in my TRUE Bionic Recur Unit game.

Gameplay wise : It would be a game where you manage multiple Toa in subjective view. You could lock your opponents (like in Metroid), use a roster of tools to fire your element (dual wield with each mouse trigger for left and right tool), and modify your Toa(s) with found parts accross the world to enhance him (allowing an evolution non dependant of levelling but the stuff you equip).

Setting : The world would not be traditionnal Mata Nui (in fact, the world Mata Nui is banished from my vocabulary relating to this project), but an altered world. For the lore I would inspire myself by the scrapped ideas for the Bionicle 2001 lore, as well as theories regarding the lost prototype lore, and compile them all in the Bionic Recur Unit universe.

Goal : The goal would be to gather masks (giving powers off course), and to make a team with at least one Toa of each elements. This would done by jumping repeatedly into a big hole, then landing each time in a random biome. But everytime you explore one biome, you can find back the Axis Mundi which contain the big hole, then do it again until you find everything you need.

Here. I would really like to know if this game would hype you more than the Bionic Recur Unit Workshop. Because in that case I could drop it for something better and that I always dreamed to make. Both would be great, yeah, but the latter would make me happier.

Thanks for reading me, may the passion for Bionicle follow your steps !

It sounds great! I can't wait! I sincerely wish you good luck in your work! I really like the style, visual, and gameplay!

Your idea for the action game sounds awesome and if that's what you feel your time is best spent on, then I'm sure we will enjoy that just as much as the workshop!

As cool as the workshop is, you should totally follow your passion! Speaking from experience, it becomes especially important to create the things that excite you when you are also working and have less time for art. A Bionicle roguelike set in its own world sounds ambitious, but very fun.

Regardless of what you work on next, Bionicle or otherwise, I hope it continues to find an audience and get a positive response!

Well guess I'm gonna make some people sad if they were expecting an update. But you're right, time gets really precious and I got to make meaningful choices.
